Choose one feeling before choosing five locations

A quiet morning in a riad and a lively walk through the city can both make a good session, but they are different experiences. Start with the atmosphere you want: intimate, playful, architectural, outdoors or a little more dressed up.

One location you can settle into is often more rewarding than a list of places you spend the session rushing between. If you want several settings, discuss the route and travel time before deciding how much can fit.

Ask about access before falling in love with a photograph

A riad is a working property, not an empty set. Ask whether a professional photoshoot is welcome, which spaces can be used, at what time and whether there are conditions to agree with the venue. Staying there does not automatically answer those questions.

For an outdoor session, talk about how busy the setting may be and how much walking it involves. The aim is to choose somewhere you can feel comfortable, rather than recreate an image whose circumstances you do not know.

Wear something you can move in

Choose clothes that feel like you and make sense together, without trying to match every colour. Think about sitting, walking and the weather on the day. Shoes matter more than they seem when a session includes uneven paths or several stops.

If a second outfit matters, build a real changing plan into the session. A small bag, water and a little time between locations are more useful than a suitcase of alternatives you never get to wear.

Let guidance do its job

A relaxed session can still include direction. Walking together, turning towards the light or pausing in a doorway gives you something simple to do, while leaving room for expressions that belong to you.

Tell your photographer if one of you feels shy, if a particular angle worries you or if you prefer to keep the session private. You do not need to perform a different version of your relationship for the camera.

A small session checklist

  • The mood and reason for the session
  • One main location, with access confirmed
  • Clothes and shoes you can move in
  • A realistic route and changing plan
  • Your comfort level with posing and public spaces
  • How you plan to use or share the photographs
